Call for evidence substances of human origin (SoHO): review of UK legislation
The call for evidence aims to gather views on whether the UK’s current legislative framework for substances of human origin (SoHO) remains effective, proportionate and fit for purpose, particularly in light of scientific and technological advances and the introduction of the EU SoHO Regulation. It seeks to:
- assess how well existing UK legislation protects patient safety, quality and accessibility,
- understand the risks, benefits and impacts of potential legislative change, including the implications of taking similar approaches to those adopted in the EU, and
- consider effects on intra‑UK and UK‑EU supply, businesses, innovation and health inequalities.
The evidence collected will inform decisions on whether, and how, the UK’s domestic legislative framework for SoHO should be updated.
This is a Department of Health and Social Care led call for evidence, with the data gathered shared with Devolved Governments and used to inform joint consideration and discussion.
The call for evidence will close at 11.59pm on 17 June 2026.
