Moray Art Centre presents The Shared Heart (12 Years), an ongoing body of autobiographical work by artist duo Bibo & Brian Keeley, which delves into the profound physical and emotional complexities of life after heart transplantation. This exhibition reflects on the artists’ journey over the past twelve years, since Brian’s heart transplant in 2013, and showcases their collaborative work in sculpture, installation, and film.
The Shared Heart (12 Years) explores themes of memory, survival, fragility, and the transformative realities of heart transplantation. Through their art, Bibo and Brian invite viewers to engage with their experiences and the intricate interplay of life, love, and resilience.
Brian Keeley
Brian Keeley is a graduate of The Glasgow School of Art and holder of an MA from Bournemouth University. In October 2025 Brian was awarded a PhD from the University of Aberdeen, for his Doctoral thesis which examines representations of heart transplantation in popular culture. He has dedicated his practice to exploring the lived experience of heart transplantation. His work often incorporates self-portraiture in the form of medical MRI imaging of his heart, and challenges the prevailing narratives surrounding transplantation and organ donation. In his words, “I seek to offer a counter-narrative which can bridge the gap between personal experience and public perception, encouraging empathy and awareness in the broader conversation surrounding health and identity.”
Bibo Keeley
Bibo Keeley, who graduated with First Class Honours from Gray’s School of Art in 2019, draws from her deep connection to nature to explore resilience and vulnerability in her artwork. Her pieces reflect the journey shared with Brian, and draw from the symbolism of patina and birds. Bibo states, “Just like the beauty and imperfection of the layered textures and subtle hues of patina evolve over time, our personal experiences of struggle, and the reasons for which we appreciate life, shape who we are.” She explains “Birds represent the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability, and serve as poignant reminders of hope and the limits of resilience”. The incorporation of bird boxes into her work aims to highlight the connection between human resilience and ecological well-being.
Moray Art Centre invites audiences to experience this unique exploration of life and art which offers personal insights into post-transplant life and gives a counter narrative to misconceptions often found in mainstream representations of the themes around transplant and organ donation.
Quote from Bibo & Brian Keeley:
“We’re honoured to have been invited to exhibit The shared Heart (12 Years) at Moray Art Centre. It’s a fantastic venue and the only one of its kind in Moray. This is extremely important for contemporary artists like us who are based in this area which is quite remote from the central belt. The support of Moray Art Centre gives us the opportunity to actively engage with the contemporary art world in Scotland”
