Overview

The British Transplantation Society Education Committee is responsible for advising Council on training and education issues, promoting excellence in transplant training and education and promoting transplantation as a career choice.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Provide advice to Council on education and training issues that pertain to all aspects of transplantation
  • Provide input, review and monitoring of transplant components of national training curricula
  • Promotion of clinical transplantation as a career to undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Review options and develop processes for BTS endorsement of training and education courses and materials
  • Provide input to curricula for transplant-related courses
  • Consider role of providing support with construction of transplant-related job descriptions
  • Provide support to BTS members to co-ordinate and/or deliver relevant educational sessions

Membership

The committee will consist of three members elected by the Society in a free ballot. This will be organised by the formal BTS Election Services to coincide with all the other elections of the BTS. The tenure of membership shall be three years from the BTS Annual Congress. The Education committee members should be encouraged to be from different specialities, including but not restricted to consultant transplant surgeons, consultant transplant physicians, specialist nurses, H&I scientists, although they all must be members of the British Transplantation Society at the time of election in accordance with BTS Rules.

Members shall be eligible for re-election for a further 3-year term.

The committee will choose the chair from amongst the elected members by single transferable vote organised by the outgoing chairperson at least 6 months before he or she retires. Potential candidates can self-nominate for the position. The chair shall have tenure for two years commencing from the date of the next AGM of the BTS at the Annual Congress. They will be eligible for re-election should no one else on the committee want to take the role of chair. The chair, or their nominated deputy, will represent the Committee on the Chapter of Surgeons Committee.

The committee will co-opt one member from each of the trainee groups: Herrick Society and British Transplant Physician Trainees, with the option to co-opt members from the Chapter of Nurses and Allied Health Care professionals or another professional group to provide balanced membership.

Members will be required to complete an annual Declaration of Interests.

The committee will meet at least three times per year and report on its activities to the Executive and Council of the BTS through the chair.

These terms of reference shall be reviewed after three years.
